Palm Sunday - "Olive Branch Sunday"

on Sunday, March 16, 2008

Palm Sunday has a long history across the world. The week we now call Holy Week, started with Palm Sunday. In the Christian calendar, the Sunday before Easter.

Some countries in Europe - Palm Sunday was called Olive Branch Sunday, are often used to areas where palm trees are unavailable and the local replacements for the traditional palm branches. Various customs have developed to celebrate Palm Sunday sixth and last Sunday in Lent and the first day of Holy Week. Traditionally in the Western Church the Palm Sunday service begins with the "blessing of the palms or olive branches" where the palms/olives used in the procession and blessed. Just sharing some of my photos...
